I have had the opportunity to work with the J2group on two OR projects. Both jobs were major projects with different scheduling systems for each institution. Both projects were an organized thorough process that was timed perfectly from introduction to becoming operational. Education to IT departments and OR staff was easily understood. J2 always conducted business in a very professional knowledgeable fashion. A real benefit to having a computerized OR system installed by J2 is that they are RN’s who have worked in the OR.

My experience in working with the J2 Group has been extensive spanning over seven years, two hospitals, three different projects and two different computer companies. The wealth and depth of the knowledge of the company, its principals and its consultants has made each and every one of these occasions a success. The emphasis on having clinical resources to evaluate and help implement documentation systems is invaluable especially because computerization is a dramatic paradigm shift and having someone speak "nurse talk" makes that transition much easier.

For many of us, we will implement a new software product for the OR twice in our career. Hardly adequate repetitions to rate us as a novice let alone competent in this skill. Why would we want to leave the design and implementation of a critical application to chance?

Several years ago, I was in a quandary. The timeline submitted by our software company was unrealistic considering the resources available. I began my search for a consultant who would represent our needs, have the proficiency to help us develop a realistic timeline, appropriately advise us on the pros/cons associated with the multitude of decisions, and expertise in the clinical environment to ensure our database was built correctly.

The J2 Group provided exactly what we needed. Jeanne Parkes worked with us throughout the project. She was a critical member of our team playing a key role in the decision process to ensure the software would operate efficiently and effectively, be easily used by the clinicians, that information would pass over as needed for PI, finance, and charging, and down-time would be minimal.

Her proficiency with multiple software products and clinical users allowed her to accurately identify our particular needs and adjust accordingly. When she was with us, she was with us. She did not respond to emails, answer phone messages, or work on other things. Her commitment to excellence was evident in everything she did. She rarely looked at the clock often working late into the evening and on the weekends.

The greatest endorsement? I am once again in the position of implementing a new software product for surgical services and I will be asking for the assistance of The J2 Group to ensure our success!

The J2 Group is far and away the most effective Consultant Group I have worked with. Most consultants tend to deliver recommendations that may or may not be realistic. The J2 Group, on the other hand, delivers recommendations that are backed up by the resources to develop and implement those recommendations. For the implementation of applications in the Perioperative Dept. specifically, the need to produce a quality design, realistic timeline and resource requirements seems to be the most challenging; it is where the “rubber meets the road” and where most projects flounder. I have been fortunate enough to work with J2 on two occasions during a succession of McKesson product installs at McLaren Health Care Corporation. The first opportunity was during the Horizon Surgical Manager implementation where Jeanne Parkes and her staff were fully dedicated to the success of the hospitals go-live. Both Jeanne Parkes and Carol Buono have a wealth of knowledge to bring to the table as well as a welcomed objective perspective when making decisions on data set up and workflow processes. The second opportunity was during the data clean up phase of the Pathways Materials Management implementation for our entire corporation. Jeanne's staff assisted with the item file clean-up including descriptions and commodity codes. The combined skill and expertise of the staff has provided us with clean, standardized data based on policies developed by the J2 group and McLaren staff during the HSM installation. Having J2 as a resource during these very stressful implementations has proven to be invaluable to McLaren and I would certainly utilize their expertise again.

J2 was an important part of the successful OR scheduling system implementation at Vanderbilt. The team analyzed existing processes to assist us in knowing what was really going on. Their absolute command of the OR environment allowed for constructive suggestions to be made and alternatives developed. This prevented us from automating broken systems. The greatest value of the engagement was achieved through the development of a set of database principles which both guided the implementation and continue to be in use to this day.

Providing a “current state preference card health assessment” was an invaluable step in organizing the preference improvement effort and entry into our new system. The J2 team performed the assessment with remarkable efficiency and insight clearly reflecting a depth of understanding of the perioperative environment. They also made, what can be a tedious process, fun for the staff involved. The quality of the preference cards created by the J2 resources clearly demonstrated a detailed clinical understanding of surgical procedures. By using clinically skilled staff to build cards, not only was the final product of high quality, the entire build process was more efficient.The J2 Group was amazingly flexible in providing skilled support during our go-live. The J2 resources had clearly “been there – done that” and truly cared about our patients, staff, and physicians. I have never been as impressed with a consulting company as with J2. The consultants at J2 do amazing work. In 2004, J2 was instrumental in teaching me the fundamentals of our system’s functionality and educating me about data standards and processes and how they affect not only charge capture, but an end user's ability to effectively use a surgical application. A J2 resource taught me how to do report-writing in our Surgi-Server system which became a very valuable skill in data collection and analysis at our organization. On a return visit in 2007, J2 resources worked beside us (in the trenches) to implement our new surgical system, and I strongly feel that the implementation would not have been successful without the excellent and tireless work that Jeanne and Carol did on our behalf.
